The user puts on a set of ear muffs and a face mask, then breathes into the carbon dioxide tube to inhale carbon dioxide. As the oxygen is diffused into the blood, it is carried away from the lungs by arterial blood during last 20-30 seconds under low pressure. Thus, a person will experience a gradual decrease in oxygen concentration of blood and short of breath. This way user can experience how long a person can survive in the extremely cold climate of Antarctica. The length of inhaling is controlled by a timer.Carbon dioxide is being diffused into the blood from exhalation, caused by the user's breathing into the box. Inhalation or exhalation match with user's breathing rhythm, providing more realistic experiences. Time is also taken into consideration during the experience. The box can be set to count down to determine the length of time it takes you to run out of air. Then, when this countdown ends, it will alert you with a message like "Your air lasts only 1 minute more" or "You are running out of air". The purpose of this timer is for user's safety.After the process is finished, the LCD screen inside the case turns off and puts an LED light on its side, indicating how much time has passed until next usage. The box can be used by several people at the same time. However, even though the box is waterproof, it is not recommended to use it under water.
